According to legend, the Gordian knot was so complex that nobody was able to untie it and thus became a metaphor for a seemingly incomprehensible problem. Alexander the Great did not even attempt to unfasten it, but exercised force to undo the quandry by cutting through it with his sword.
Sometimes we build a Gordian knot in our minds. We start with one end of a rope, but in order to try to understand a complicated issue, we approach it from different angles to perceive the mystifying answer of the apparent solution, our minds end up getting tangled and bound up by the same twisting rope. It is in this time of overwhelming baffling thoughts, that we need to take decisive action, like cutting through the twisting rope with a two-edged sword.
The Gordian Knot is acutely comparable to the forbidden tree of the knowledge of good and evil in Genesis 2 and eating thereof will surely cause multiple conundrums. Human reasoning (did you know there are 7 types?) of what is perceived as good versus experiences of bad can only result in head-breaking misunderstandings, pain-inducing decipherings, endless searching for correct definitions, a strive for accurate assessments and eliminate mortal and moral faulty theories, applying logic from thousand different perspectives and cultures and time-lines with an endless twisting of words and perceptions and meanings and communication gaps and bewildering conclusions which inevitably leads to more complicated questions. It is to say the least “extremely perplexing”. And who can claim to be more correct than another? None of us, however educated or wise, have the capacity to proclaim judgement completely fair. All of humanities are self-serving and Gordian knot-ish.
Compare this Gordian-knot-forming tree to the “Sword”. This represents a clearcut truth. Like Alexander the Great, it doesn’t help to analyse different opinions and angles, but to use a two-edged sword to cut through confusion. There is only One Way to deal with the Gordian knot (aka the tree of the knowledge of good and evil) and that is to eat from the tree of Life, i.e. use the Word of God. It is alive and active and sharper than a two-edged scalpel (Heb 4). It pierces and cuts to separate the inseparable soul and spirit, able to divide intricately woven bone and marrow and accurately judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Nothing is hidden and all is exposed.
To eat from the tree of Life means to read, study and apply the Word of God in your life which will give you inward and spiritual food, the renewal of your mind-house and cause soul maturing through God’s sustaining power and goodness. And so you can ask, if this tree of Life is locked up in paradise behind an angel with a flaming sword, how can it be of any benefit for me today, while it is still called “today”? How?
Amazingly simple. Ask and you shall receive. Seek and you shall find. You will find the abundance of unusual, yet exquisite flowers and Love growing out of fertile Word soil and the Spirit will Guide you to a Peace beyond human understanding. While trusting Him implicitly, the Perfect Surgeon will cut through deep-seated dark deception and hidden lies of death with the Sword and reveal soul-saving Truth through Christ. Even though, cutting through your earthly flesh will leave scars of Joy, He can and He does deal with it faultlessly, without harming the predetermined identity and intentionality He gave you and I.
